HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHANGES

People who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure (or hypertension) do not necessarily have to spend the rest of their lives taking medication. In some cases, healthy lifestyle changes can help you control this disease. A person has high blood pressure if their pressure is measured at 140 or higher (systolic pressure) over 90 or higher (diastolic pressure). Not everyone who has been diagnosed with hypertension will be able to completely stop taking medication, but some changes in diet and exercise may reduce the need for medication. Never stop taking your prescribed medication. Always follow your doctor's advice. If you are overweight, the first thing to do to help reduce your blood pressure is to lose weight. Losing even a few pounds can make a big difference in your overall health.

Medications may be more effective if you weigh less. Your doctor can advise you about a good target weight based on your height, age and medical history. Focus on losing unhealthy belly fat. Abdominal fat contributes to serious health conditions, including hypertension. Begin a regular exercise program to help you lose weight and lower your blood pressure. People with slightly elevated blood pressure may be able to avoid getting this condition by starting a program of eating healthy foods and exercising regularly. Studies have shown that exercising between 30 and 60 minutes per day several times each week can lower your blood pressure up to 9 millimeters of mercury (measurement of blood pressure also noted as "mm").

Exercises, such as brisk walks or riding a bicycle for 15 to 20 minutes every other day will help. Change the way you eat and what you eat. Drop the greasy burgers for healthy fruits and vegetables. Trade in your French fries for whole grains, nuts and berries. Keep a food diary, and write down every food you eat for one week. If you keep a true record of what you eat, when you eat it and why you ate the food, the diary will shed light on your eating habits and may help you decide to make important lifestyle changes. Decrease your sodium intake by consuming fewer snack foods, such as potato chips, and cut back on processed foods.

Eat less bacon and try to avoid lunch meats because they are usually very high in sodium. Small amounts of alcohol can help lower your blood pressure, but drinking in excess can have a reverse effect. Reduce the amount of caffeine in your diet and make sure you get enough potassium in your diet. Ask your doctor about ways to increase the potassium in your system. Potassium helps keep sodium in the body from increasing blood pressure. Try to get your potassium needs from healthy fruits and vegetables rather than from supplements or medication. Your doctor can tell you how much potassium you need.

PROPER EATING DURING PREGNANCY

We get so concerned about the proper eating during pregnancy that we neglect to look at the big picture. Having the best pregnancy & nutrition is important, but what happens after you have your baby? Do you go right back to your unhealthy habits? Do you gain a lot of weight, or neglect to shed your baby weight? Ultimately, these next nine months should be about healthy lifestyle changes that you can maintain forever. Use these next three trimesters as your boot camp for a healthy lifestyle. After all, you will have to chase after that baby for a long time—and you want to be able to keep up with him!

Stress Reduction
Your baby experiences everything you experience, so if you get stressed out, your baby does too. This means your heightened blood pressure, increased heart rate, and adrenaline output also affects your little one. So during pregnancy, you have to learn how to deal with stress effectively. This is a positive lifestyle change you should follow for the rest of your life. Some women prefer exercise or yoga for stress reduction, while others like to pray or meditate. Some enjoy talking with friends; others prefer to journal their thoughts. Find a means of stress reduction—or a few—that really work for you and use them on a regular basis. It will help keep you healthy and happy in the long run.

Proper Nutrition
Once you are eating for two—not in terms of portion size, but in terms of giving your baby proper nutrition for development—your whole perspective on diet changes. All of the sudden, that Twinkie doesn't look so tasty. All at once you begin questioning the pesticide levels in your foods. This caution and increased awareness will serve you well for the rest of your life. The nutritional changes you incorporate now, such as switching to organic foods, eating more vegetables, and eating lots of healthy fats—can help you stay nutritionally sound and active for decades.

A Good Night's Sleep
It can be difficult to get a good night's sleep during pregnancy, especially during the third trimester when your general discomfort levels reach a peak. But nothing can help prepare you for the day ahead like a good night's sleep. If you have trouble sleeping at night, scheduling a nap for your day is a good way to make up missed sleep. Healthy amounts of sleep can be difficult to achieve throughout your life, but it's essential to your good health. You should get at least eight hours per night. If you have trouble with sleep, consult with your nutritionist or your health care provider to see if there are any natural lifestyle changes you can make to improve the quality and quantity of sleep you get.

Healthy and Active Movement
If you can stay active during pregnancy, you should have no trouble staying active through your entire life. Knowing that you are staying in shape for labor and keeping your weight down so you can return to your pre-baby weight are both powerful motivational factors. You can make exercise so much of a habit, like brushing your teeth that you feel weird if you don't do it every day. Staying active throughout your life will help keep you in shape and keep obesity and obesity-related health problems at bay. Exercise can also reduce your risk of developing joint problems and other arthritic complaints. Exercise is also a wonderful way to reduce stress in your life. Finding a type of exercise—be it dance, yoga, tennis, golf, swimming, or anything you choose—that you enjoy and that can be used to increase your longevity is something you should add to your healthy lifestyle.

GLYCEMIC INDEX

With your current diet we will examine to see what you might think is healthy may actually be quite high on the Glycemic Index. When you had your bowl of corn flakes for breakfast this morning did you think that you were eating a healthy meal? Surprise! Corn flakes rank quite high on the Glycemic Index at a whopping 83 of a 100.

But if you're reaching for another serial; like Rice Krispies G.I. of 82 or Puffed Wheat with a G.I. of 74 you can see that what we thought was healthy ranks high on the G.I. (Glycemic Index). That is the reason why we need to check the G.I. for cereals that rank below 50.Why? Because if you have diabetes type 2 like me, then these high glycemic load foods are not the best for us to eat. These foods create glucose spikes in our blood and then our bodies carry around too much of the stuff to remain in good shape. An all-American summertime food that is really a surprise is watermelon with a G.I. of 72.

There are many candy bars that score lower than that! When you take potatoes and fry or bake them - you will end up spiking your insulin levels. For example baking a potato has a G.I. of 85, whereas French fries come in at 75. Both are high on the G.I. but shows you fat can help slow the absorption of glucose in the blood. As much as I like baguette, French bread, I have to say no because it ranks 95 out of 100 on the Glycemic Index. For a diabetic like me, eating baguette can be disastrous to the way I feel later in the day, so instead of setting myself up for another bad day, I now refuse to eat it even though I really love to.

Even if it was a bit hard at first, some foods I have had to scrap from my diabetes menu, as I have learned that it is better for me to love my health rather than the taste of some foods I eat. In the end, my better health tells me changing eating habits that are bad for me is not that hard after all. You will find that many seemingly harmless foods have perfectly sinful GI scores, including pretzels, with a whopping 81 on the Glycemic Index. When it comes to food choices there are some no-brainers. Donuts come in at a hefty 76 on the index, as do waffles. White dinner rolls don't fare any better coming in at 73. But the good news is there are good tasting bakery products that will rank less than 50 on the Glycemic Index. By using the Glycemic Index I can visualize a healthy you. Make today the first day of the rest of your healthy life.

ORGANIC FOOD

Perhaps the single greatest thing to happen to nutrition in the last 20 years has been the rise of organics. An organic food item is one that is farmed or raised without the use of pesticides, chemicals or other unnatural compounds. If you live in a big city, chances are you have markets full of organic produce and meats. If you live in a more rural area, you may have to locate organic farmers in your area.

Here are just a few organic additions you can make to your life to improve your health. Organic bars are energy bars that are organic can be a huge boost to your overall nutrition and to your health. Let's face it, we all like to snack. However, instead of reaching for a candy bar or some other chemical-laden food item, reach for organic bars instead. They are made of all natural fruit and nuts and they taste great. They work as a standalone snack or they work as a meal replacement in a pinch. You won't believe the difference organic bars make to how you feel each and every day.

What is organic veggie? If you've never had the opportunity to taste organic vegetables and fruits, here is a little challenge for you. Buy some organic bananas and some regular bananas and try them one right after the other. If this doesn't turn you into a full-time advocate of organic food, nothing will. The difference between organic and non-organic veggies and fruit is like night and day. Not only is the flavor more intense, they are better for you, as well. It is important to know where your food comes from and organic farmers are mostly small, independent farmers who do what they do out of love. We could all use a little more love in our lives.

What about organic milk and juices?  The same boost in flavor and nutrition that we find in organic veggies and fruits can be found in organic milks and juices. If you need proof, perform the same kind of taste test you did on the banana. You simply won't believe the intensity of flavor found in organic products. While it is true that organic milk does cost a bit more than regular, it is more than worth it when you realize it tastes better and is better for you.

Let’s talk about organic meats.  The toughest transition for many people to make is from regular meat to organic. The price difference here is huge, but it is important to understand the benefits you get from an organic piece of chicken or a steak. The animal was fed all natural, organic feed for their entire life. No processed garbage, no bits of other animals. Obviously the cost of doing this is high for the farmer, but you are getting the healthiest piece of meat you could ever imagine. Many people who commit to an organic lifestyle simply eat more organic bars and less meat, which is a cost-conscious way of doing things. Try an organic chicken breast and see the difference it makes.

BODY DETOXING

Our bodies are exposed and unprotected in front of toxins that could further cause illnesses such as cancer. The harmful toxins can be developed internally, in our bodies, like a by-product resulted from metabolic activities, yet there are much more external harmful toxins. We accumulate these kinds of external toxins from contact with smoke, food chemical preservatives, environmental chemicals, alcohol, drugs such as cocaine and anabolic steroids, chemical toxins (aluminum, lead etc). The list of such external toxins is really limitless, and considering these harmful toxins will always find their way to get inside our bodies, it is a very important measure to perform body detoxing, if we want a healthier lifestyle.

Taking a look at body detoxing, there are many various aspects that must be understood. Do you know what bodily organs participate in the detoxification process? Is natural mercury or juice detoxing the best programs to follow, when it comes to bodily detoxing? An all natural detoxing program is the only right program and the reasons for this statement are plenty. It is highly recommended to seek advice from the health specialist because he or she will have the ability to determine the finest follow-up to a detoxing program. A specialized detoxing center could be the only one useful, when it comes to alcohol or drug related detoxing.

In the Chinese saying, "With right eating, no doctor is necessary. With wrong eating no doctor can cure" the correct interpretation is essential: getting good nutrition could save you from developing toxic content in the body. There is no other person better at taking proper care of your body, but you. The answer to disease-free living starts with you. A detoxing diet or juice fasting is perfect for individuals who feel sluggish and also full.

For a serious detoxification, you will have to be on track with overcoming harmful toxins. A mix of juice fasting and natural detoxing will be an excellent start up. After doing this, perform regular exercises such as health spa massages, meditation and yoga. A change in the current lifestyle and diet is the paramount facet of a detoxing diet. Changing the junk foods with organic meals is everything what counts. Such meals are full of fiber and low in fats. A higher intake of fruits and veggies, nuts, beans and lots of water, and reducing caffeine, alcohol and sugar intake is going to perform the detoxing method very well.

You may also consider colon cleansing. The reason for this is that the bile produced through liver is finally deposited within the colon and digestive tract. Since the colon measurement is over six feet long, you can do the mathematics and find out the rate of harmful toxins' accumulation inside it. If it's not detoxified regularly, the harmful toxins might slip into the blood stream through the colon walls, thing that might finish up with harmful accumulation in the major bodily organs. Remember to seek advice from your doctor whenever you feel like changing something with your diet.

CALORIES IMPORTANT

Calories are important when it comes to our physical appearance and our overall health. The calories we consume give us the energy we need to function on the daily basis. They also add fat in unwanted places when you are consuming more than you burn. The calories we burn are also important because we need to burn more than we consume in order to maintain a healthy weight. However, too many people focus on burning calories making them participate in aerobic activity several hours a week. This is not necessary; it is a waste of your valuable time. Here's how it works.

Everything you consume has calories; everything you do burns calories. When you work out you burn the most calories. What many people ignore, or may not be aware of, is that working out does not just burn calories at that moment. Instead, you burn calories throughout the day. Your metabolism is the rate at which your body burns fuel, also known as calories. The faster your metabolic rate, the faster your body will burn these calories for you. This being said, there are workout programs that will help you burn calories more efficiently.

Rather than focusing on burning a bunch of calories during one work out - typically a cardiovascular workout - it is more important to focus on calories burned throughout a given day. To increase your caloric burn you need to build muscle with strength training exercise rather than lose muscle and water weight with aerobic exercise. Strength training exercises help you to build and maintain lean muscle mass. When you have more lean muscle mass than you do fat mass, you will have the ideal body. But, you will also have a body that functions as it should. Anyway, stop wasting hours running or swimming. Instead, find about 30 minutes at least 2-3 times a week to work, and challenge your muscles.

This little bit of time will give you a faster metabolic rate, more energy, a much firmer physique, and can even add years to your life. When muscle mass is greater than fat mass your body has a much better chance of fighting, or avoiding, many life-threatening diseases like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and even cancer. So, it is up to you. Do you want to sit on the couch and watch your life slip away? Do you want to spend 2 hours a day jogging, walking, or running just to try to lose a few pounds? Or do you want to spend 2 hours a week building muscle that will give you the life that you deserve? Stop wasting your time on meaningless exercise and get yourself into a regular, proper strength training program. Start losing fat and start burning your way to that sexy physique that many only dream of. Stop sitting on the couch thinking there is nothing you can do about that flabby belly or those love handles. Change your life and lifestyle choices today.
